Good health is the most important thing or asset any human being will ever have! In fact, call it a blessing! If you are healthy, have all of your body function normally, and can carry out your daily activities without your body complaining or in pain, then count your blessings.
What’s the Fuss About Female Bodies?!
Females have been known to have the most complicated body systems. When it comes to hormones, oh dear…that’s another story. Men have always expressed how they do not understand their women, may it be their bodily function or their hormones in play; they just can’t get it! Do you know what that means? Women are wonderfully made special beings, and before you get cocky, and so are men…hehehe
Being a woman, I understand that we have many obligations, responsibilities, and activities that swamp us or literally swallow our time, leaving almost none to take care of ourselves. I am not talking about beauty and makeup and dressing up. No! As much as that is very important for our femininity, today I am talking about taking care of our health.
Our bodies are structured in such a way that they can and always alert us when something is off. What do I mean? When you get that pinch or slight pain on your lower abdomen, or that recurring headache or even that abnormal monthly flow; the body is communicating. It is telling you that it is not okay and you need to do something about it.
We all love free and DIY things, right? But when it comes to health, before you self-medicate or prepare your DIY concoctions, please consult a health specialist. Better yet seek an opinion from your girlfriends and you may be surprised they could have experienced the same or are going through it, and together you can seek professional medical advice. However, I must remind you that, your body is your own; no one will come to take care of it for you.
Your body is your own, treat it as such. Invest in it, cherish it, and take care of it the best way you know. Good health comes first on the list.
I embarked on research to identify the most common warning signs that our female bodies give us, and what they may be telling you. These signs are easily ignored by most women; please do not ignore them! However, note that this is not professional advice; it is only meant to RAISE AWARENESS and encourage you to take conscious steps to good health. 1. Pain in the pelvic region
Do you experience pain in your pelvic region when walking, running or working out?
There are several possible causes of this. Once you experience it, you should visit your doctor immediately to establish the actual diagnosis. Possible causes include;
What is it saying:
- Endometriosis: When a tissue similar to your endometrium (inner layer of the uterus) is growing outside the uterus. This means that new endometrial cells are binding your internal organs and hence the pain.
- Appendicitis: Sharp pain in your lower right part of the stomach, fever, and vomiting.
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)/Spastic colon: Reoccurring belly pains, diarrhea, constipation, bloating
- Mittelschmerz (Painful Ovulation): painful twinge and irritation in-between periods and some blood plus fluid during ovulation.
- Ectopic pregnancy: When the embryo implants in the Fallopian tubes. It causes sharp cramps and pelvic pain, dizziness, vaginal bleeding, and nausea.
- Sexually Transmitted Diseases: common types that cause pelvic pain: gonorrhea and chlamydia.
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Belly pain, pain during urination and sex, abnormal vaginal discharge, and fever. Results from STIs. It is considered as the number one preventable cause of infertility amongst women. It can cause permanent damage to the uterus, Fallopian tubes, and ovaries.
- Ovarian cysts: Can cause swelling, bloating, pressure and pelvic pain. If the cysts bursts, severe pain can be experienced.
- Uterine Fibroids: Common in women above 30 years. They grow inside the wall of the uterus. Can cause; heavy periods, pressure in the belly, difficulty getting pregnant, painful sex, and lower back pain.
2. Blood Clots in Your Period
Menstrual clots are normal and are most time no cause for alarm. They are basically a mixture of uterus lining tissue, blood cells and proteins whose purpose is to regulate the flow.
However, you are advised to see your doctor if the clots;
- Are frequent
- Are accompanied by significant pain
- Their size is larger than a quarter
- Occurs during a heavy period requiring you to change the sanitary pad almost every 1 to 2 hours
3. Losing your hair
Loss of hair can be caused by different factors which may include your genes/heredity, hairstyles, hair products as well as certain medications and supplements. However, the loss of your hair could be a symptom of a medically related condition.

What is it saying:
- Hormonal imbalance: This could result from pregnancy, menopause, childbirth, and thyroid problems.
- Medical conditions: This may include; alopecia areata, ringworm infection, and trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder)
- The side effect of medications: These medications may include drugs for; heart problems, cancer, depression, high blood pressure, arthritis, and gout.
- Radiation therapy: After the therapy on the head, your hair may not grow back to normal once again

4. Lower Back and Leg pain
Back pain is a very common condition for both males and females. Back pain may spread to the legs if left untreated. Some symptoms related to back and leg pain are. Tingling, limited mobility, burning sensations, and soreness.
What is it saying:
Possible causes of back and leg pain are;
- Sciatica: This is pain associated with the sciatic nerve, usually resulting from a herniated disk. The sciatic nerve connects through the lower back to the hips, butt and the legs. Associated symptoms include; burning sensations, pain from the spine to the back of the leg, numbness, sharp jolts of pain, muscle weakness, and difficulty controlling bladder or bowels.
- Piriformis syndrome: This is a neurological condition that happens when the piriformis muscle compresses the sciatic nerve. Common symptoms are; numbness of the buttocks, pain to the lower leg, and tingling.
Vocabulary: Piriformis is a band-like, flat muscle located in your glutes near the top of the hip joint. It stabilizes the hip joint and rotates and lifts the thigh off your body.
- Arachnoiditis: This is the inflammation and/or irritation of the arachnoid hence causing pain. Common symptoms are; ‘skin-crawling’ sensations, stinging, twitching, muscle cramps, numbness, bladder or bowel dysfunction, and burning pain.
Vocabulary: An arachnoid is a membrane whose role is to protect the spinal cord nerves.
- Lumbar herniated disk: This is a ruptured disk located in the lower back. This raptured disk then puts pressure on the spinal nerve which results in numbness, severe pain and weakness. Other symptoms include; leg muscle weakness, back spasms, persistent back pain especially when standing, sneezing or coughing, numbness in foot and leg, as well as difficult flexing of the knee ankle.

5. Pimples on your chin
Acne breakout is common to most women especially two weeks before their menstruation. This is caused by changes in hormone levels; estrogen and progesterone hormones increase. The acne, however, fades away after a short while.
Another cause of these pimples is the androgens hormones. These hormones are responsible for stimulating the production of sebum (oil) which then clogs the pores. This is most common amongst teenagers due to high hormones production levels.
According to Healthline, if these two are not the causes, then your pimples on the chin could be rosacea. Rosacea is characterized by visible blood vessels and pus-filled bumps.
What is it saying:
Hormonal imbalance: Reoccurrence of this kind of acne may be an indication that you have imbalances in your hormones levels and therefore should visit your doctor as soon as possible. If not managed, hormones can cause stress and undesired feelings that are likely to affect the day to day activities.

The above 5 warning signs should at no cost be ignored as they can be detrimental to your health. Once you notice these signs you should visit a medical specialist immediately. Some warning signs can be fatal and only have very short window periods.
